After 46 years, the Rigiblick Funicular in Zurich is receiving two new, modern vehicles. To increase comfort and safety, the cabins are equipped with Ruf’s VisiWeb passenger information system, which also includes the new VisiWeb Communicator.
Presentation of the new funicular cabins
The new cabins for the Rigiblick Funicular were delivered on August 12, 2025. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, they were officially presented to the public in the presence of City Councillor Michael Baumer and VBZ Director Martin Sturzenegger. The cabin design is inspired by VBZ’s Flexity trams. The barrier-free interior now provides sufficient space for strollers and bicycles as well as a total of 33 passengers.

VisiWeb Passenger information system
Passenger comfort and safety are ensured by Ruf’s VisiWeb passenger information system, now integrated into the cabins. Each of the two cabins is equipped with two VisiWeb passenger intercom units of type RCOM E0, allowing passengers to establish a direct voice connection with the VBZ control center when needed.
VisiWeb Communicator
Conversely, thanks to the VisiWeb Communicator, the control center can actively establish a connection to the passenger area, enabling two-way communication via loudspeakers and providing passengers with important information. The VisiWeb system in the new vehicles complements the VisiWeb installation that has already been in operation at the stations since 2011.
History
The history of the Rigiblick Funicular began in 1901 with the opening of the “Rigiviertel” line, which was electrically powered from the very beginning. Unlike older funiculars, no steam or water counterweight system was used, as Zurich was already far advanced in electrification at that time.
In 1979, the fully renewed line entered service under its current name “Rigiblick Funicular.” As the first fully automated, licensed funicular with intermediate stations in Switzerland, it once again made history. The blue-and-white cabins introduced at that time served reliably for 46 years and are now being replaced by the new vehicles.
Scheduled service resumes on September 26, 2025
Regular service on the Rigiblick Funicular will officially resume on September 26, 2025. Until then, test operations will be conducted to check the systems, optimize processes, and train staff.
