New VisiWeb neo for CAF trains in São Paulo

In São Paulo, the commuter trains of the Spanish manufacturer CAF are being upgraded to the latest generation of the VisiWeb neo passenger information system. The updated system manufactured by the Swiss ICT company Ruf offers numerous new functions with a focus on passenger safety and operational efficiency.

In the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo with its millions of inhabitants, 140 metro vehicles from various railway manufacturers are already running with Ruf’s VisiWeb passenger information system. The multiple units are operated by two companies MSP (Metrô São Paulo) and CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos). The VisiWeb System has been in reliable service in Brazil for nearly ten years.

Passenger information system being modernised
Currently the system is being modernised in 35 eight-car trains of the Spanish manufacturer CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles). With VisiWeb neo, new functions will be available for operator CPTM that not only increase passenger safety and comfort, but are also crucial for efficient operations.

VisiWeb neo offers the following advantages:

  • VisiWeb neo – Bedienpanel OPU, mit Touchscreen

Integration of the cameras at stations
The video cameras that are installed at the stations will be integrated into the VisiWeb solution. These video streams can be displayed on the screens of the VisiWeb control panel (OPU) in both driver’s cabs. This allows the train driver to have an overview of the situation at the stops in both directions of the train, which enables a high degree of safety when preparing for departure..

  • Redundant communication
Voice communication between the control centre and the train driver must be guaranteed at all times. A second, redundant communication channel is therefore being set up alongside the existing train radio. This communication channel is entirely provided via the VisiWeb system and is thus independent of the radio. VisiWeb takes over the function of a complete Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone exchange.
  • Remote video surveillance
In addition to video surveillance and image storage in the vehicles, the control centre is able to view the live streams of the cameras in the vehicle’s passenger compartment remotely. This enables a faster reaction and the initiation of the right measures in case of an emergency.
  • Multimedia streaming into the vehicles
VisiWeb neo controls the reception of live information and video streams. This allows the control centre to display up-to-date timetable information or advertising on the monitors in the passenger compartments at any time.
  • Future built in
VisiWeb neo offers potential for expansion with additional functions that can be set up as required. VisiWeb offers the possibility to function as a central data hub where vehicle data, system status and its components as well as the GPS of the location are transmitted to the control centre in real time via telemetry

The CAF trains equipped with the latest generation of the VisiWeb neo passenger information system will go into service at the end of the year 2021.
