With VisiWeb® Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS), Ruf Group is ushering in the next generation of video surveillance in public transport. The intelligent combination of edge computing on board the vehicles and cloud-based video management transforms the conventional onboard CCTV system into a powerful, scalable solution and elevates it to an entirely new level. This innovation can eliminate the need for a separate onboard video recorder.

The pioneering approach relocates image processing directly into the cameras, at the point where the data is generated. At the same time, a central cloud platform enables efficient and user-friendly control, analysis and archiving of video streams from all cameras across the vehicle. This combination ensures faster and more effective operational management while providing a safe, cost-efficient and GDPR-compliant surveillance solution.

VisiWeb® VSaaS is built on an intelligent system architecture in which image processing and control functions are optimally distributed. Parts of the logic are shifted locally into the vehicle. Smart IP cameras, equipped with integrated processing power (edge computing), carry out initial analysis and processing tasks directly at the source of events and, when required, upload video footage to the cloud via a secure LTE/5G connection.

Fast and Secure Analysis
Thanks to the cloud-based solution, both response time and effort required for incident analysis are reduced to a minimum. Previously, the data carrier containing the recorded video material had to be physically removed from the vehicle and handed over to the investigative authority. With the cloud solution, this time-consuming step is completely eliminated. The transport operator can provide the authorities with secure, temporary access to the platform. For incident evaluation, the video footage is transmitted at the time of the event directly from the vehicle’s cameras to the cloud via an encrypted connection. The vehicle remains in regular service throughout the process and continues to be fully available for operations.

The SaaS solution is centrally administered and continuously enhanced. Updates and the deployment of new functions are provided via the cloud. System updates for onboard cameras are carried out remotely, independent of location, through the cloud platform.
